What is Guided Imagery & Music?
The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, or GIM for short, is a gentle but powerful therapeutic technique involving carefully collated programs of music, usually classical music.
The client and therapist discuss the client’s needs at the beginning of the session. Together, they set an intention for the session - what the client wants to explore. The therapist carefully selects the appropriate music to allow the client to experience imagery. The client then enters a state of relaxation. The experience is much like deep daydreaming. Some clients experience images in their mind’s eye, whilst others experience feelings in their body or memory-based material. The therapist asks non-leading questions that deepen the client’s imagery. As the music evolves, so does the imagery, leading the client to revelations and the potential for deep healing. This process of music and imagery is usually followed by some form of creative process to help integrate and process the experience. Sessions usually take 60 - 90 minutes, and may involve the therapist offering ideas for further reflection or processing outside of sessions.
GIM can be used to address and explore:
stress
burnout
anxiety and depression
life changes
relationships
self-care linked to PTSD
past trauma
managing addiction recovery
loss and grief
It can also be used in the exploration of
creativity
general personal development
Clients who engage with GIM often report profound shifts in self-awareness, stress reduction and emotional integration. Over time, many experience lasting increases in resilience, enhanced clarity of life purpose and a renewed sense of inner calm.
Training in the BMGIM method is a three-level process, involving intensive learning and supervision. I am currently a third-level trainee. Bear in mind that I am a fully qualified and HPCSA-registered music therapist, so standard therapeutic care and ethical practice are in place.
Third-level trainees are permitted to charge full fees for GIM sessions; however
I am currently offering a number of sessions for a reduced fee.
Session availability is limited, so contact me quickly for more information!
